The route, the roads and the tolls

DistanceTypical journey timeRoads usedTolls
15 miles45 – 75 minutesMidtown Tunnel then the Long Island Expressway and Van Wyck Expressway, or the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel and Belt Parkway from Lower Manhattan.Queens-Midtown Tunnel or Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, depending on your starting point. Both are inside the published rate.

What to know about this run

The Van Wyck Expressway is the choke point on this route, not the tunnel. It backs up from roughly 3:30pm on weekdays and stays bad until well after 7pm.

From Lower Manhattan the Belt Parkway route is usually quicker and avoids the Van Wyck entirely — but it is longer in miles, so a metered fare punishes you for the better road. On a flat rate it costs you nothing.

For a morning international departure out of Terminal 4, we normally suggest leaving Midtown three hours before wheels-up. That is more conservative than most people expect, and it is the recommendation that has never once caused a problem.

The return leg is a different journey

Manhattan to JFK and JFK to Manhattan are not symmetrical problems. Outbound, the risk is traffic and your only defence is leaving earlier. Inbound, the risk is the flight, and flight tracking removes it entirely.

On the return leg the sixty minutes of complimentary wait time begins when the aircraft lands rather than when it was scheduled to, so a delay costs you nothing. That is the single most useful difference between a booked car and a rideshare on an arrival.

Meet-and-greet at JFK matters more than at the other two airports, because the terminals are large, the international halls are busy, and the walk from an arrivals gate to a rideshare lot with luggage is genuinely long.

Neighbourhoods and pickup points

We cover the whole island for this route — Financial District, Tribeca, SoHo, the Village, Chelsea, Midtown, Murray Hill, both Upper Sides, Harlem and Washington Heights.

From below Canal Street the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel and Belt Parkway routing is usually quicker and avoids the Van Wyck entirely. From Midtown and above, the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and Long Island Expressway is the default.

For hotel departures, tell us whether to use the main entrance or the car entrance. Large Midtown hotels frequently have a dedicated one that saves several minutes.

Frequently asked questions

$165 in a Business Sedan, $210 in a Luxury SUV and $310 in a Sprinter Van, all-inclusive. Tolls, standard gratuity and wait time are already in that figure.

Forty-five to seventy-five minutes. Allow the full seventy-five in the weekday afternoon peak, when the Van Wyck Expressway is at its worst, and closer to forty-five late evening or mid-morning.

Three hours before departure for an international flight, two and a half for a domestic one. Add thirty minutes if you are travelling between 3:30pm and 7pm on a weekday.

Yes. The figure you are quoted at booking is the figure you pay. Traffic, a longer routing, or a driver choosing the Belt Parkway over the Van Wyck all cost you nothing.
