What to know about this run
This is the New York airport run where metered pricing hurts most. The trip crosses a state line, a river and a toll plaza, and every one of those is passed through to you at the end — on top of any surge multiplier.
The weekday evening tunnel queues are the worst of any airport approach in the region. Between 4pm and 7pm, allow ninety minutes rather than the usual hour.
When a tunnel closes there is no good alternative — the George Washington Bridge adds distance and its own congestion. We monitor both crossings and reroute rather than sit.
Where the money actually goes on this route
The Newark premium over JFK is almost entirely tolls rather than distance — sixteen miles against fifteen. What you are paying for is a Hudson River crossing, the New Jersey Turnpike and an airport access fee.
On a metered trip all three of those are added at the end, on top of whatever the meter reached and on top of surge. That is why a Newark run is the single most common source of an unpleasant surprise at the kerb in this city.

Building a buffer for the tunnels
We recommend an extra thirty minutes for Newark departures that we do not recommend for JFK or LaGuardia, and the reason is that the failure has no workaround.
A Van Wyck problem has the Belt Parkway. A tunnel closure has the George Washington Bridge, which is considerably further and carries its own congestion. The difference between those two fallbacks is thirty to forty-five minutes.
If your departure is between 4pm and 7pm on a weekday, treat ninety minutes as the planning figure rather than the worst case.
