The standard gratuity for a chauffeur in New York City is 18 to 20 per cent of the fare. Many operators, including ours, already include standard gratuity in the published rate — so check your confirmation before tipping again. An additional $10 to $20 for exceptional service is welcome but never expected.
Check whether it is already included first
This is the part that catches people out. A large share of licensed operators build standard gratuity into the quoted rate, and a similar share do not — and the two look identical on a booking page.
Our published rates include standard gratuity. If you are booking elsewhere, the question to ask is simply whether the quoted figure is inclusive. It changes the real price by roughly twenty per cent, which is usually larger than the difference between operators you were comparing.
If gratuity is included and the service was ordinary, you are done. Nothing further is expected, and no chauffeur will think less of you.
What to add for exceptional service
Where a chauffeur has genuinely gone beyond the booking — waited well past the included window without complaint, handled a difficult luggage situation, rerouted intelligently around an incident and saved your flight — ten to twenty dollars in cash is a normal and appreciated gesture.
On a full-day hourly booking, where the same chauffeur has looked after you for eight or ten hours, a larger amount is customary — commonly $40 to $60 on top of an inclusive rate.
Cash is preferred, simply because it reaches the chauffeur directly and immediately.
Weddings and event bookings
Wedding bookings are the one case where an additional gratuity is close to expected, even on an inclusive rate. The chauffeur is working a long, unpredictable day with a great deal of waiting, and is frequently the person quietly solving problems nobody planned for.
The common range is $50 to $100 per chauffeur for a full wedding day. Many couples hand this to a member of the wedding party in an envelope in advance so it is not something to think about on the day.
What chauffeurs actually say about tipping
The consistent feedback from our own chauffeurs is that the gesture matters more than the amount, and that the things they remember are not financial: being told the plan for the day, being offered a break on a ten-hour booking, being treated as a professional rather than as furniture.
The second consistent point is that a tip on top of an inclusive rate genuinely is a bonus rather than an expectation. Nobody is keeping score, and no client should feel awkward about a booking where gratuity was already included.
Where a chauffeur has fixed a problem — rerouted around a closure and saved a flight, waited an extra hour without being asked, handled a difficult situation discreetly — that is the moment a cash tip lands well, because it is clearly attached to something specific.
Tipping on corporate accounts
Corporate bookings billed to an account usually have gratuity built into the rate and settled centrally, which is generally the point of the arrangement — the traveller should not be handling cash.
If you are a traveller on a corporate account and want to add something personally, cash is straightforward and does not complicate the invoice. If you are the assistant booking on somebody's behalf, it is worth confirming with finance how gratuity is handled before the trip rather than after.
Frequently asked questions
Sometimes. Our published rates include standard gratuity; many operators quote a bare rate and add eighteen to twenty per cent at the end. Always confirm which model you are being quoted, because it changes the real price by about a fifth.
Eighteen to twenty per cent is standard where gratuity is not already included. Where it is included, nothing further is required, though $10 to $20 for genuinely exceptional service is welcome.
If gratuity is not included, the same eighteen to twenty per cent of the total applies. On a long day with an inclusive rate, $40 to $60 for the chauffeur is customary.
Fifty to one hundred dollars per chauffeur for a full wedding day is the usual range, and it is close to expected even on an inclusive rate given the length and unpredictability of the day.
Cash where you can. It reaches the chauffeur directly and immediately rather than routing through payroll.
